 THE WORK OF THY HAND

“That's the point of working with one's hands, you see. It gives the mind something else to do besides worry.”

― Charles Todd, A Duty to the Dead

Two important factors determine the growth and development of any nation. Her level of educated individuals and the number of productive laborers (skilled and unskilled) that such a nation possesses.

Diving into the giant of Africa, one can easily discover the high level of educated individuals every year but then, one will be amazed at the level of underdevelopment and poverty in the country. Nigeria is a rich fertile land blessed by God with abundant mineral resources and her people with the technical know-how to tap it. Yet her Leaders left it untouched waiting for the Messiah to come to help them tap it.

It has gotten to the point where as a nation we need to start looking inward and retrace our steps to days when we truly earn the name Giant of Africa. When we were known for our large export of skilled and unskilled Labour, one of the highest exporters of Groundnut, cocoa, leather (hide and skin), and one of the most fertile lands in the world when it comes to agricultural produce. When one Naira equals One Pound.

We have to start creating an enabling environment for the small and medium-scale industries. Even the youth now have to start believing in themselves and rely more on their locally made produce than imported ones. The inculcation of vocational skills into her education system is now of paramount importance as the reliance on foreign produce, skills, and expertise has crippled her economy.

The fashion world no longer appreciates her produce because the citizens don’t appreciate what they have. The Tech. world now hunts for experts who were initially neglected and underpaid, but now are willing to pay double to bring in that same expert after several years of experience in other countries that appreciated them. I wonder how a nation that is struggling to get constant electricity supply also doubles as the supplier of electricity to other nations that have constant electricity and expects itself to grow.

It’s high time we retraced our steps and reclaim our rightful place in the world economy.
