The Eagle That Once Flew

O God of creation

Direct our noble cause

Guide our leaders right

Help our youth the truth to know

In love and honesty to grow

And living just and true

Great lofty heights attain

To build a nation where peace and justice reign

I look back each passing day at the times we all recite the anthem every morning in school with all form of delight and a bigger picture of graduating someday from the university, getting a government job and an official car. Today I ask myself, ‘what happened to that eagle?'

A country with a lot of bright young productive minds now has one of the highest rates of unemployment and insecurity with no productivity. A country whose citizens and leaders were once respected for who they are all over the world, now have to deny their citizenship just to get a free passage to another country. A country whose diverse culture and tradition once landed her on the list of every nation as a tourist site now  has the same culture and tradition dividing her and leading to her downfall. A country which was said to be one of the  booming and developing economy in Africa and one to reckon with around the world is now one of the crashing economy one can think of with almost the highest level of poverty in the world.

A country whose growth and development once rested mainly on agricultural produce such as cocoa, millet, cassava and groundnut can’t even recognize the road to the farm. One of the top crude oil producing states in the world now has to pay for her refined crude and her residents fights just to get the same fuel. A country that supplies electricity to other countries can’t boast of 24hours of uninterrupted power supply. Her petroleum sector that takes a large portion of her budget now contributes nothing to her GDP. Her health sector is crying for help. Her educational sector is being washed away by the erosion of strikes and inadequate facilities. Her elections is around the corner and her leaders are saying the demand of her labor force is unreasonable but find it reasonable to spend millions to get delegates to vote for them.

What has happened to the eagle?

Can the eagle still fly?

Has she lost her wings?

Has she lost her crown?

Has the giant fallen?

Do eagles still fly?

Only time can tell.

God bless the federal republic of Nigeria. Nigeria is great!
